The Story of the Art

Love is the Boys & Girls Club

Artist Paul Johnson worked with youth members of the Boys & Girls Club in Detroit Lakes to create a series of drawings he merged into the mural design. The youth members involved with Johnson are in the 1st through the 6th grades.

Paul asked the youth to create drawings that reflected three key Boys & Girls Club principles:

  • Be healthy.
  • Be successful in school.
  • Be good to others.

Johnson digitized each drawing and combined the images on his computer screen to create the mural.

About the Artist

Paul Johnson

Paul Johnson is a long-serving (20+ years) communication art and design instructor at Alexandria (Minnesota) Technical & Community College.

He is a native Minnesotan and principal behind Paul Johnson Design & Illustration. Paul completed his 13th Concordia Christmas Concert Mural last December (2022).

Johnson received his education from Minnesota State University Moorhead and was employed for 13 years as a corporate artist at Banner Health System, Fargo, North Dakota.

Earlier, he worked as graphic designer for David Hetland, former artist of the Concordia Christmas Concert murals for 28 years.
